Interesting Info For Nottinghamshire Visitors

Nottinghamshire is an English county that is located in the East Midlands, which joins the borders of Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire. The City of Nottingham used to be administrative part of Nottinghamshire between 1974 and 1998 and has now has been promoted to be a unitary authority, however, it still is a part of the ceremonial and historic county.

Nottinghamshire is located on the Romn Fosse Way and there is evidence of Roman settlers at Mansfield. The county was created by Angles during the 5th century and became a portion of the Kingdom and later Earldom, of Mercia. However, there is evidence about the Saxons too.

During Norman times the county started developing malting and woolen industries. When industrial revolution took place, canals and railways were granted to the county and this gave rise to lace and cotton industries. In the 19th century collieries started working and mining gained success and became a significant economic business sector, however both of these nose dived after the 1984, 85 miners strike.

Many times its borders were changed, and firstly it was divided into six districts and later reduced to four. It is also popular for its involvement with the legend of Robin Hood. This is a reason why City of Nottingham, Sherwood Forest and the surrounding villages in Sherwood Forest are visited by tourists in large numbers.

Map of Nottinghamshire was first sketched by Christopher Saxton in 1576, but the first fully focused map of the county was done by John Chapman who produced Chapman's Map of Nottinghamshire in 1774. The map was the initial printed map at a considerable useful scale. It had 1 statute mile equal to one inch and provided and told everything about village layout and the existence of landscape features such as toolbars, roads, mills, milestones and parkland.

Close to the previous coalfields, along the Trent that is on the counties east side edge, are two massive power stations of Cottam and West Burton. Another one, High Marnham is currently shut down. On the south of Nottingham, once again close to the Trent, is the Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station. Near Newark there is a plan to start a gas turbine power station at Staythorpe, adjoining the Trent, on the same site, where former Staythorpe A and B coal fired power stations were located.

Presently there are two coal mines at Thoresby, one in between Edwinstowe and Ollerton, and the second Welbeck at Meden Vale close to Market Warsop. The pit at Harworth, which is in the far northern side of the county, looked closing down in 2006, but the idea was shelved. Most of the pits in the Worksop and central Nottinghamshire region were closed in the 1990s.

The county has an excessive secondary education system with 7 independent schools and 47 state secondary schools. Also included are Worksop College and the City of Nottingham LEA, which has 18 state schools and 6 independent schools, not included are the sixth form colleges.

The best results in 2007 examinations came from the West Bridgford School, followed by Rushcliffe Comprehensive School and the Minster School located in Southwell. All schools in the Rushcliffe district performed excellently, except the lonely one in Radcliffe on Trent. The poorest performance was of the Queen Elizabeth's Endowed School in Mansfield. The best results came from the Trinity Catholic School and the Fernwood School in Wollaton in the city.
